Roman Pilum

A low poly asset, my Roman Pilum. The Roman Pilum was used by the Roman army during ancient times, with the idea that by throwing these javelins at the enemy, it would create cracks in the enemy's shield defense, which would then allow the roman army to penetrate the enemy's line of defence with their Gladius'.

Got the idea to make this after watching some gameplay of Ryse: Son of Rome. I decided to model a vast array of roman equipment, including armor and additional weaponry. The model uses 4096 * 4096 resolutions for both texture and normal/bump maps, because this then allows me to downscale them to a lower resolution whilst maintaining as much detail as possible gained at using higher resolution textures, resulting in a flexible resolution size for the situation given.

Romans had some very cool weaponry, and in many ways they were the masters of war and craftsmanship.  I believe the challenge in creating this model was maintaining detail from a camera distance that you would normally expect when playing an RPG game utilizing a 3rd person camera system. The benefit of this camera system is that you can drop the texture resolution quite low without losing much detail, whilst at the same time lowering file size and potentially increasing game performance should the technique be utilized on a lot of models, especially if the game uses Level of Detail techniques.
