World War 1 Helmet

World War 1 Helmet, formally known as a Brodie Helmet. Created this as part of a miniture World War 1 project in which I made an array of items from World War 1 in 3D. Probably one of the most iconic pieces of kit, the Brodie helmet went by multiple names such as the M1917 helmet. It is a steel combat helmet designed and patented by Englishman John Leopold Brodie. The Americans called it the doughboy helmet, and the Germans called it the Salatschussel (Salad Bowl).
Low poly asset, I wanted this one to look rusted, worn and dented as if it had seen heavy use in the battlefield, almost like a hand-me-down helmet. Whilst making this helmet, I learnt that I could use a texture of my choice to create sculpt detail and as such I could add a very rusted, rough and worn look to the helmet before finally applying the texture itself as a diffuse map. The final product I think is great, however it is missing the strap to actually keep the helmet on the soldiers head. I am also pleased that on the inside, the inside of the helmet is still quite clean and smooth, as nothing would really get in there other than someone's head. Whilst at the same time, the rest of the helmet is worn due to being thrown around and used a lot.
